Preparing finishes & 3D renders...
Looking for a professional painter near you in Nigeria? Learn how to check previous work, compare painting quotations, choose suitable materials and hire the right painter for your home or building project.
When you start searching for a professional painter near me, you probably have one main concern: finding someone who will do a good job without wasting your money.
Maybe you have just completed a house and need someone to handle the interior and exterior painting. Perhaps you are renovating a flat in Lagos, repainting a shop, or preparing a property for a new tenant. Whatever the project, choosing the right painter can make a noticeable difference to the final result.
Most people know that good paint matters, but the person applying it matters just as much. A good-quality paint can still look rough if the wall is poorly prepared, the wrong primer is used, or the painter rushes through the job.
This is why finding a reliable professional painter involves more than asking someone for a phone number and agreeing on a price.
In this guide, we will explain how to find professional painters in Nigeria, what to look for before hiring one, how to compare painting quotations, and how to protect yourself from common mistakes.
Have you ever seen a freshly painted wall that looks uneven, with visible roller marks, rough patches or paint peeling around the edges? These problems are not always caused by the paint itself. Poor preparation and application can also affect the finish.
A skilled painter understands that a good result begins before the first coat is applied.
The wall may need sanding, filling, cleaning, screeding or priming. Exterior surfaces may require additional attention because they are exposed to rain, sunlight and changing weather conditions. Decorative finishes such as stucco, textured coatings and other specialist designs may require particular tools and techniques.
Hiring the right person can help you:
Of course, no painter can promise that paint will never peel or fade. The condition of the building, the materials selected and the environment all play a role. What you want is someone who understands the work, communicates clearly and takes responsibility for the agreed scope of the project.
Finding a painter is often easy. Finding someone whose work matches your expectations takes a little more effort.
Here are some practical ways to begin your search.
Start by asking homeowners, landlords, contractors or people you trust whether they have worked with a painter they would recommend.
However, do not rely on recommendations alone. Ask to see photographs of completed projects, especially work similar to yours.
If you are looking for someone to apply decorative finishes, for example, ordinary emulsion painting experience may not be enough. Ask to see examples of the specific finish you want.
Look closely at corners, ceiling edges, window frames and the areas where two colours meet. These details can tell you a lot about the painter's attention to finishing.
If possible, arrange to inspect a completed project or speak to a previous client. This gives you a better idea of how the painter works beyond what you see in photographs.
Online searches can help you discover painting services in your city or neighbourhood without having to visit several locations in person.
Try searches such as:
You can also explore business directories, local community groups and service platforms.
If you use BukkinHomes to find or enquire about painting services, check the actual information available on the platform, including the service area, contact details and examples of work. Confirm claims from every Painter through their available chat system before relying on any Painter.
Do not assume that a painter is trustworthy simply because their name appears online. Take time to check their work and agree on the details of your project.
Not every painting job requires the same skills.
A painter who regularly handles bedrooms and sitting rooms may be perfectly suitable for an ordinary repainting project. However, a large duplex, commercial building or decorative wall installation may require additional experience and equipment.
Before hiring, explain what you need.
For example, are you looking for:
Ask whether the painter has completed similar jobs and what preparation the work will involve.
If the walls have persistent dampness, structural cracks or serious plaster damage, you may need a specialist to address those issues before painting begins.
Before agreeing to a price, have a proper conversation with the painter. A few questions now can prevent misunderstandings later.
A good quotation should explain whether the job includes sanding, filling minor cracks, scraping loose paint, screeding, priming or other preparation.
These tasks are not automatically included in every painting price. Make sure both parties understand what is covered.
Some clients prefer to purchase paint themselves, while others ask the painter to source everything.
Both arrangements can work. If the painter is buying the materials, agree on the brands, product types, quantities and budget before purchasing.
Ask for receipts and check the supplied products when appropriate. If you are buying the paint yourself, ask the painter to estimate the quantity and specify the type required.
Ask for an estimated start date, completion date and working schedule.
The time needed will depend on the size of the building, the number of coats, the condition of the walls and the drying requirements of the products.
Rain and humidity may also affect exterior work and drying conditions. A realistic schedule is better than a promise to finish quickly at the expense of proper preparation.
Discuss how defects will be handled before work starts. Agree on a final inspection and clarify what corrections are included in the quoted price.
This is particularly important for large jobs, decorative finishes and projects where several rooms or floors are being painted.
One of the most common questions people ask when searching for professional painting near me is how much the work will cost.
There is no single rate that applies to every painting project in Nigeria. The price depends on several factors, including the following.
Size of the property: A small room generally requires less labour and material than a large duplex or commercial building.
Condition of the walls: Walls that need extensive scraping, repairs, screeding or priming will require additional work.
Type of paint: Different paint qualities, finishes and product specifications have different costs.
Height and accessibility: High ceilings, exterior elevations, scaffolding and difficult-to-reach areas can increase labour requirements.
Location: Transport, labour availability and local market conditions can affect quotations.
Decorative designs: Specialist finishes such as stucco and textured designs may require additional skill, preparation and time.
When comparing quotations, do not look at the final amount alone. One painter may include surface preparation, primer and multiple coats, while another may quote only for applying paint.
Ask each painter to separate labour from materials where practical. This makes it easier to compare like for like.
Also, be cautious of a quotation that is dramatically cheaper than the others without a clear explanation. It may exclude important tasks, use different materials or underestimate the amount of work required.
The best choice is not necessarily the cheapest painter. It is the person who can clearly explain how the agreed work will be completed within your budget.
This depends on your budget, availability and how much control you want over the materials.
Buying the paint yourself gives you direct control over the brand, quality and amount purchased. It may also make it easier to compare prices from different suppliers.
However, you need an accurate estimate to avoid buying too much or too little.
Allowing the painter to source the materials can be more convenient, especially if you are managing a project from another city. In that case, agree on the approved products, quantities and prices beforehand.
Whichever option you choose, make sure the paint is suitable for the intended surface and environment. Ask the painter to explain why a particular primer or topcoat is recommended.
For example, exterior walls exposed to heavy rainfall need a coating system suitable for exterior conditions. Interior walls may require a different product depending on the room, desired finish and cleaning requirements.
Finding a suitable painter is only the beginning. Clear communication throughout the project helps everyone understand what is expected.
Write down the rooms or surfaces to be painted, the colours, the products, the number of coats where specified, the preparation work and the expected completion date.
Include any special requirements, such as painting ceilings, door frames, railings or decorative feature walls.
A written agreement, even a straightforward one, reduces the chances of disagreement later.
Do not wait until the entire house has been painted before checking the work.
Inspect the walls after repairs and preparation, before the finishing coats are applied. This is a useful opportunity to identify missed cracks, loose material or uneven surfaces.
If the property has a history of dampness, confirm that the underlying problem has been addressed rather than simply covered with fresh paint.
Discuss the payment arrangement before the project begins. For a substantial job, payments can be linked to clearly defined stages of work.
For example, the agreement may cover material delivery, completion of preparation and completion of painting, with a final inspection before the outstanding balance is paid.
The actual arrangement should suit the size and nature of the job. Keep records of payments and receipts, particularly when materials are included.
Once the painter says the job is finished, walk through the property together.
Check for missed areas, uneven coverage, paint splashes on fittings, rough edges and damage to floors or furniture. Allow the coating to dry sufficiently before making a final assessment of its appearance.
Compare the result with the agreed scope of work and record any corrections that need to be completed.
Even if you are working with a limited budget, a few precautions can save you unnecessary expenses.
Choosing someone based only on price. A low quotation may not include proper preparation, suitable materials or all the rooms you expect to be covered.
Failing to agree on the paint type. The word “paint” is not specific enough. Confirm the product, finish and intended use.
Paying the full amount without clear terms. Agree on payment stages and keep records rather than relying entirely on verbal promises.
Ignoring dampness and wall damage. Persistent leaks and moisture should be investigated before repainting.
Failing to inspect the work. Regular checks make it easier to address problems while the painter is still on site.
Assuming every painter can apply decorative finishes. If you want a specialist design, ask for examples of that particular work.
These precautions do not mean you should distrust every artisan. They simply help both sides work with clear expectations.
Start by searching for local painting services, asking for recommendations and checking previous projects. Compare the painter's experience, quotation, availability and understanding of your requirements before making a decision.
The cost depends on the room's size, wall condition, paint quality, preparation requirements and location. Ask for a quotation that clearly states whether paint, labour, primer, repairs and the number of coats are included.
A painter generally carries out painting work. A painting contractor may also estimate materials, organise a team, coordinate schedules and manage a larger project. The exact responsibilities depend on the individual or business, so confirm what each quotation covers.
It is often useful to consult the painter first so the surface can be assessed and the right products and quantities estimated. You can then decide whether to purchase the materials yourself or have the painter supply them.
Painters can often handle minor surface preparation and filling, depending on their skills and the agreement. Major cracks, structural defects and persistent dampness may require a builder or another specialist before painting can proceed.
The duration depends on the property's size, the number of rooms, the condition of the walls, the preparation required and the products being used. A small repainting job may take much less time than a large building requiring repairs and several coats. Ask for a realistic schedule based on an inspection.
Inspect the agreed surfaces for missed areas, uneven coverage, rough edges and paint splashes. Confirm that the agreed preparation and finishing work has been completed, and document any outstanding corrections.
Yes, but remote management requires extra care. Request a written quotation, agree on the materials and schedule, keep payment records, and arrange progress photographs or visits by a trusted representative. For larger projects, consider an independent site inspection.
Finding a professional painter near me should not be about choosing the first person who offers to do the job. It should be about finding someone whose experience, workmanship and approach match what your property needs.
Check previous projects, discuss preparation, agree on materials and prices, and make time to inspect the work. These simple steps can help you make a better decision, whether you are repainting a single bedroom, finishing a duplex or maintaining a commercial property.
